Carl Kozlowski is a reporter and standup comic in LA who won the title of "America's Funniest Reporter" from the Laugh Factory. He wrote a story about me last year for "LA Citybeat," and to date it is on my list of favorite articles written regarding my life and specifically my career. He has been so kind to me and such a supporter that I feel inclined to return the favor. Carl has written a pretty hilarious book called "Seize the Day Job! The Humor Book Al-Qaeda Kept You From Reading." He sent the final draft to me and I liked it so much i gave him a quote for his front cover: 'Seize the Day Job is not just a funny book, but a great way to stick it to Al-Qaeda for under 20 bucks." It's a spoof of advice books and also has a lot of funny things to say about the crazy shit we're going through in the world right now.
There's millions of books out there but not many that are really funny, and these days we can all use some more funny. There are a lot of books out there but this one is patriotic, funny and written by a good guy that has been good to me so I hope you check it out. It is released through an indie publisher, so the book's not in many stores yet, but you can order it quick and easy three ways online: either through amazon.com (even if it says sold out, you can order it and they'll catch up in a few days), or even better through Carl's own website americasfunniestreporter.com, or his publisher Razor 7 Publishing's site, razor7.com
Carl's got other stuff coming out soon, so if you dig him you can add him at myspace.com/carlkoz
On the tour bus processing what went down since Memorial Day weekend. The shows have been going very well. The whole DJ mixing music with iconic comedy bits is going much better than I anticipated. If you get a chance to see the tour, that part of the show is truly amazing. DJ Goldenchild is an unbelievable artist. We grove artistically very well. It's pretty awesome that I can think of an idea then DJ takes it to another level with his remixes and mixing. The opening acts are on fire. They really are kicking ass. After this tour they'll all be too big to open for me anymore. The DJ, the video elements, the lighting effects, the opening acts and my act have all come together to create the best show I've ever put together. Every show I have had many servicemen giving me thanks for my comedy and support.
Also every show so far, at least one cancer survivor has told me that my comedy has helped them get through their hard times. I can't tell you how amazing that makes me feel. My intent with my comedy has always been to make people laugh, entertain and to affect people's lives in a positive way but when it actually happens I feel like I am doing what God placed me on this earth to do. All this and all the people I meet before the shows in the lobby that let me know how funny the show was. I could get used to this.
I'm sitting on a bench here at the airport in Boston feeling really emotional. This weekend the tour stopped by Cape Cod and Hampton Beach. The reception was unbelievable to me. I'm sure you have heard the word "crossover" before. It's kind of old to be honest. Anyway when I was very young in comedy that's all we ever talked about whenever the "minority" comics hung out. Personally, I performed at the Comedy Store in Hollywood on the Sunset strip and that club always had a very mixed crowd racially and the majority of them were out of towners, so I felt like my training as a comedian served me well to do well around the country.
From the beginning I was always conscious of not alienating people of any background. I want to be funny to everyone. I know that that is impossible but that is the goal. I can't believe how many people dig my comedy. Truly I am blown away. I know that when you see me perform you would think that I'm unshakable but damn, I can't believe that this career belongs to me. I am a Honduran kid named Ned who grew up in East LA who got his ass beat because I had a white name and I wasn't Mexican, at one point on welfare and government cheese and now I'm Carlos Mencia and people enjoy my comedy across the country.
I might have always acted like I knew this would happen but I am really living this dream and I shed tears as I write this. I need to say thank you to all you fans, you are unbelievable to me. I'll keep writing blogs but you should really check out the videos from the tour as well.
So I'm on a plane listening to some music and thinking about what's going on in my head. I just finished the 4th season of Mind of Mencia. This year had to be the craziest season for me. I had put a lot of pressure on myself to make this season the best ever in every way possible. The show took so much out of me this year but for the first time I am 90% happy with the show. It could never be 100%. That is not in my nature. I ALWAYS feel like I could do better. That is what drives me to keep doing this after twenty something years of comedy, the cynics, the haters, the accusations of plagiarism etc.
For the first time at the end of the season I'm not thinking about what I would do differently next season. That is a very good feeling, tough at this point I don't know how much more I have to give as far as the show is concerned. I feel like I have said all I wanted to say and I don't know how I would keep it fresh and that is very important to me. To me life is about growth and I feel a spurt coming on. I feel like I need to reach farther and higher. The stand up special I shot earlier this year that aired on Comedy Central was some of my best work and it has been nominated for a few awards already but still there's always better. I am doing this tour, "At Close Range" this late summer and going through December which starts this weekend at Red Rocks in Denver.
This is one of the most prestigious venues in the world and I get to start what I believe to be the most important tour of my life there. The reason I say that it is the most important is because I was told by many people in my camp that this is not a good year for a tour because of the economy and gas prices. I was told it would be better to do it another time when things got better. I'm sure they're right about ticket sales being affected but I believe that at times like this, people need to laugh and escape their problems more than ever. What kind of human would I be to ignore what is my gift to the world, my responsibility to the world because of money. I can't do that. It's not in my nature.
These words might sound bizarre to some of you because of my stage presence but know this, the reason I do what I do is because I truly believe that I am making the world a better place. I really love people. That's why I am out in the front as soon as they open doors and I run back out there as soon as I get off stage every single show. I love meeting the fans, seeing their faces and how happy they are to meet me and get close enough to shake a hand or hug. It means a lot to me. I am in the process of picking my opening acts. I rarely have one person open shows for me. I want to give back to the comedy community by giving them opportunity to a few instead of just one. You know what I'm tired. We'll continue this very soon.
Be well
Hey guys! It's been a while since I wrote but today is the season 4 premiere of my show Mind of Mencia and I wanted to take this time to write to you and thank you guys for making it possible. I know that without you watching the show and supporting me, there would be no Mind of Mencia.
I'm really busy taping the episodes and hope that you like what's coming up. This is going to be the best season ever. We have a new stage design, new opening credits, new characters, it's really great.
Tickets have just gone on sale for my new tour starting in a couple of months and people have been asking me about adding shows here and there. We're working on getting some more dates added, but when we do, you guys will be the first to know.
Oh, I also wanted to take this time to write to everyone and thank you for the amazing response I've received with my new stand-special "Performance Enhanced". I have gotten so many great emails and comments that it's taking me a long time to read through all of them but man it's great to see how you guys reacted to it.
So, thanks for everything guys. Tune in this season to Mind of Mencia, back on Wednesdays at 10:30/9:30 central starting TONIGHT, May 21st!
What's going on every one. It seems like forever since I've said anything to you. I feel like there's so much to tell. So instead of getting into all kinds of things I should have and in time will talk to you about, I will recap and let you know what is going on right now. In the past few months I went to Iraq to perform for the troops, I went later to Iraq to once again perform for the troops in Kuwait, I recorded a special at the Hard Rock Casino in South Florida and I started production on the new season of Mind of Mencia.
Let's get to that. I've written a bunch of stuff for the show and we already taped a few pieces. There are a lot of things that I changed about the show this year. It past three seasons have been great and I want to keep doing the show for many years to come so I felt that I needed to make it fresh so that it doesn't get stale and boring for me and you as well. I wish I could articulate to you what the changes are but I say this honestly, I really can't put my finger on it it's just different. It feels more fun and funnier.
The first episode airs on May 21st on Comedy Central. You will see then what I mean. The special I recorded airs on May 18th on Comedy Central and everyone I know that I have showed it to say that it's the best I've ever done. I can't say that because I am proud of all my work for the most part. Trust me I always think it can be better but that is the perfectionist in me. I will say that I worked on putting this special together more than any other and that's a fact. I did a mini club tour and I went to the Comedy Store on Sunset in Hollywood for at least four months trying to get the material cohesive and tight. Again, you will see what I mean when you see it. I am aware that a lot of you want to see me perform live and I want you to know that I am doing a nationwide tour in the fall but I'll talk to you about that later. My plane is about to board. I am in Detroit and I am on my way home now.
